The Thirteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ratified in December 1865, officially abolished slavery and involuntary servitude in all of the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 had freed slaves in Confederate states, it did not apply to slaves in Union states or border states. The Fourteenth Amendment, ratified in 1868, granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States, including former slaves, and the Fifteenth Amendment, ratified in 1870, granted voting rights to African American men. However, it was the Thirteenth Amendment that directly and unequivocally abolished slavery in the U.S.
