Elephantiasis, also known as lymphatic filariasis, is caused by parasitic worms that are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. The larvae develop into adult worms in the lymphatic system and cause swelling and thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, particularly in the legs and groin area. Eating uncooked elephant meat or exchanging body fluids with an infected person are not known to spread elephantiasis. Worms burrowing into the skin of feet and drinking contaminated water or food may cause other parasitic infections, but not elephantiasis.
