According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the United States does not have the highest per-capita rate of HIV/AIDS infections. As of 2020, several countries in sub-Saharan Africa have higher rates, with Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) having the highest. The United States does, however, have a significant HIV/AIDS epidemic, with an estimated 1.1 million people living with the virus as of 2018.
