During an action potential, sodium ions rush into the cell through the opened sodium channels, which causes the membrane potential to switch from its resting potential of -70 millivolts to a positive potential of around +35 millivolts. This positive change in potential is known as depolarization. However, the sodium channels eventually close, and potassium channels open, allowing potassium ions to rush out of the cell, which restores the negative membrane potential. This process is known as repolarization.
