When a person is treated with a single anti-HIV drug, the drug kills off all of the sensitive viruses, leaving only the pre-existing resistant viruses. These resistant viruses then continue to replicate, leading to a build-up of drug-resistant strains of HIV. This is why combination therapy, which uses multiple drugs with different mechanisms of action, is often used to manage HIV infection.
