Nucleotides consist of three basic components: a nitrogen-containing base, a five-carbon sugar (pentose), and a phosphate group. The nitrogen-containing base can be either a single or double ring structure and can be either a purine (adenine or guanine) or pyrimidine (cytosine, thymine, or uracil). The five-carbon sugar used in nucleotides is either deoxyribose (found in DNA) or ribose (found in RNA).
