If the cardiovascular system maintains homeostasis within a normal blood pressure range, there may be little to no effect of aging on their hearts. If you are hypertensive, however, there may be dramatic changes. Vascular resistance increases with age in individuals with hypertension. This increases afterload, which then requires higher diastolic and mean arterial pressure to move the same amount of blood through the system. The heart becomes less efficient due to decreased resting stroke volume which decreases cardiac output. The vessels thicken, and become less elastic. This makes the vasculature more susceptible to developing atherosclerosis.
