Action potentials generally travel away from the cell body down the axon of a neuron.

 Action potentials involve a change in the electrical charge across the membrane of the axon, making the inside of the axon negative relative to the outside. Potassium ions do not enter the axon during an action potential, but rather move out of the axon to repolarize it after the depolarization phase. Action potentials also do not become weaker as they travel down the axon, but rather maintain their strength through the process of saltatory conduction in myelinated axons.
