The UCC places no obligation on a bank to certify a check if it does not want to do so, and the refusal to certify is not a dishonor of the check. A certified check, under the UCC, is "a check accepted by the bank on which it is drawn." When a check is certified, the drawer is discharged, regardless of when it was done or who obtained the acceptance.
