Blood types are determined by the type of antigens on the red blood cells. The antigen types being A antigens and B antigens. In the plasma, there are antibodies against whatever antigens the individual does not have. A person with type A blood has A antigens on the red blood cells and will produce antibodies if B blood is transfused. David can receive type B and type O blood. If he received a transfusion from Steve (type AB), the antibodies in David's blood would attack the donated blood cells and cause a transfusion reaction.
