Through breathing, air high in oxygen is brought into the lungs and air high in carbon dioxide is breathed out. From the air in the lungs, oxygen diffuses into the pulmonary capillaries in the lungs and out of the blood at the tissues. Carbon dioxide follows the opposite pathway. Exchange of gases between the blood in the pulmonary capillaries and the air in the lungs is called external respiration. Exchange of gases between the blood and the body tissues is called internal respiration.
