The outer layer of the kidney is the cortex. The inner layer is the medulla which is divided into the renal pyramids (A) which contain the nephron loops and the renal columns. The open area which is inner most is the pelvis (D) where urine collects before it leaves the kidney through the ureter (E). The renal artery (B) brings arterial blood to the kidney and the renal vein takes venous blood away (C).
