Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, is an active regulator of water retention/reabsorption in the kidney. It causes the kidneys to reabsorb water from the urine and return it to the bloodstream, decreasing urine output and increasing blood volume. ADH is produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland in response to changes in blood osmolality or blood pressure.
