River blindness, also known as onchocerciasis, is caused by the parasitic worm Onchocerca volvulus. The larvae of the worm are transmitted to humans through the bite of infected blackflies (not mosquito), which breed in rivers and streams. The adult worms can invade the eyes, leading to blindness, and also cause skin lesions and other complications.
