Chlorhexidine is found in many antiseptic products from oral rinses to hand disinfectants. As an oral rinse it is used to treat redness, swelling, and bleeding of inflamed gums (gingivitis), prevent aphthous ulcers (canker sores), and decrease the amount of plaque deposited on teeth. Antiseptics and disinfectants are never intended for internal use. The aldehyde group is never used as an antiseptic because of the potential damage to human tissue at any concentration. Ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol antiseptics are not for consumption because these products contain denaturing agents, methylisobutylketone, and color additives that are poisonous.
