Oxytocin is primarily involved with labor contractions before birth and milk ejection after birth, while antidiuretic hormone (ADH) is essential for water conservation throughout life. Although they produce markedly different responses, oxytocin and ADH are polypeptides that only differ in the placement of two amino acids: isoleucine and leucine in oxytocin versus phenylalanine and arginine in ADH. Each hormone travels down nerve axons (axonal transport) to the posterior lobe, where the hormone is retained until needed.
