In ferns the dominant generation is the diploid sporophyte that produces sporangia; sites of meiosis that produce haploid spores. The spores give rise to a haploid gametophyte; a leaf looking structure that does not contain vascular tissue, called the thallus. On the thallus are antheridia, which produce sperm, and the archegonium, which produce eggs; the sperm require water to swim to the archegonium and fuse to produce a diploid zygote which remains in the archegonium. The young sporophyte grows from the gametophyte and eventually gives rise to the mature sporophyte. The mature sporophyte is a vascular plant with true roots, leaves and stems.
