Pulmonary surfactant is primarily secreted by type II pneumocytes in the alveoli of the lungs. Type I cells, also known as pneumocytes, are responsible for gas exchange. Alveolar macrophages, also known as dust cells, are immune cells that phagocytize and remove foreign particles and microorganisms in the lungs. There is no such thing as type III pneumocytes.
