While Charlemagne's army was large, it was not the largest in history at the time. The expansion of the Carolingian Empire was successful against many different groups, but most notably against the German tribes to the east. The Saxons were not quickly destroyed, and it took several campaigns to fully subdue them. Charlemagne did not capture all of Europe, as Italy remained largely independent at the time. The Carolingian Empire did expand into Spain, but it did not capture most of it from the Moors.
