Desiderius Erasmus was a Renaissance humanist and Catholic priest who criticized the corruption and abuses within the Church, but he did not intend to break away from it. His ideas of reform included a return to the original teachings of Christianity, the study of Scripture and the church fathers, and the improvement of the clergy through education and moral reform.
