The communists, led by North Vietnam, ultimately achieved victory in the Vietnam War. The war resulted in the unification of North and South Vietnam under communist rule. The United States withdrew its troops in 1973, and the war officially ended in 1975 when the North Vietnamese army captured Saigon. Neither the United States nor NATO won the war. South Korea also sent troops to fight on the side of the South Vietnamese, but their contribution was not significant enough to claim victory.
