The anterior pituitary primarily releases tropic hormones, which stimulate other endocrine glands to release their hormones. Examples of tropic hormones include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which stimulate the gonads to release estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. The anterior pituitary also secretes growth hormone (GH) and prolactin. Estrogen is mainly produced by the ovaries (in females) and testosterone is mainly produced by the testes (in males). Releasing factors (also known as releasing hormones) are produced by the hypothalamus and stimulate the anterior pituitary to release its hormones. Vasopressin (also known as antidiuretic hormone or ADH) is released by the posterior pituitary, not the anterior pituitary.
