Most slaves in the Lower South labored on large plantations where they worked in agricultural fields and performed a variety of tasks ranging from planting and tending crops to harvesting and processing them. While some slaves may have also been used as household help, the majority worked on plantations. It is unlikely that slaves supported the institution of slavery, as it was a system that actively oppressed and exploited them. Escaping from their masters at one point may have applied to some slaves, but it was not a defining characteristic of the majority. Lastly, it is important to note that slaves were primarily people of African descent, and very few, if any, were white.
