The Battle of the Alamo was won by the Mexicans, but at a great cost. The Mexican army lost around 600 soldiers, while all of the Texan defenders (approximately 200) were killed. The battle did not secure Texan independence, which was achieved a few months later at the Battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna's strategic brilliance was also not a major factor in the battle, as he suffered significant losses while taking several days to defeat the outnumbered and outgunned defenders. Travis and Bowie both died defending the Alamo, rather than being taken prisoner.
