Nondisjunction occurs in anaphase of meiosis I or II when the homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids fail to separate properly. This results in gametes with an abnormal number of chromosomes, which can lead to genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. Nondisjunction does not occur in anaphase or telophase of mitosis or metaphase of meiosis II as the chromosomes segregate normally during these stages.
