This is because the addition of HBr follows carbocation intermediate formation. The more stable carbocation is formed by the attachment of the positive charge on the carbon with more number of H atoms. Here, 2-methylpropene has two possible carbocation intermediates, one at the primary carbon and the other at the secondary carbon. The secondary carbocation is more stable than the primary carbocation. The Br- ion, therefore, attacks the secondary carbocation to give the major product, III, after deprotonation.
