In the care of patients with severe hypoxemia, acute right-sided heart failure, or shock, thrombolytic therapy may be administered for lysis of the emboli. However, for patients with no evidence of hypotension, thrombolytic administration has to be individualized. When thrombolytic therapy with streptokinase and urokinase is used, heparin should not be infused concurrently.
