The pentose phosphate pathway allows for 5-carbon sugars to either converge with or diverge from the glycolysis pathway, allowing for the interconversion of different sugars and production of important metabolic intermediates such as ribose-5-phosphate and NADPH. It does not result in the direct production of ATP and does not couple the loss of CO2 with the formation of NADH like the TCA cycle. There are multiple different sugar molecules involved in the pathway, but not all of the sizes listed in choice C.
