An exonuclease catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphodiester bonds from either the 5' or 3' end of DNA molecules. This results in the removal of nucleotides from the end of the molecule, leading to its degradation or modification. Exonucleases do not catalyze polymerization of nucleotides, separation of complementary strands or formation of circular DNA molecules.
