Electroconvulsive shock therapy (ECT) can be a life-saving treatment for severe depression with suicidal tendencies when time is of the essence. It is generally reserved as a last resort treatment when other therapies have been ineffective, have produced severe side effects, or when the patient's condition is particularly severe. ECT has been shown to be effective in up to 80% of cases involving severe major depression, mania, and certain types of schizophrenia, and it can be safer than medication for patients with other severe conditions, such as bipolar disorder, when taken for long periods. Memory loss associated with ECT is generally temporary, and patients can usually resume normal activities soon after treatment.
