Diversity in family structure reflects cultural differences and changing times, such as same-sex couples and single parent households, but this does not necessarily mean that the family has broken down. It simply means that there are different variations of family structures present in society. This does not infer that most families are dysfunctional. Additionally, research has shown that children can thrive in a variety of family structures, so it is not necessarily true that they suffer when they do not grow up in the traditional family structure of a mother and father. Finally, diversity in family structure is not the same as a nuclear family, as the latter refers specifically to a family consisting of a married couple and their biological or adopted children.
