Long bones grow in length at the epiphyseal plate, which is a layer of hyaline cartilage located between the epiphyses and diaphysis of the bone. As new cartilage cells are formed in the epiphyseal plate, they push the older cells towards the diaphysis, where they are eventually replaced by bone tissue. This is how the bone grows in length. Once the epiphyseal plate ossifies and becomes the epiphyseal line, the bone can no longer grow in length.
