TATA boxes are sequences found in the promoter regions of eukaryotic genes, specifically in the core promoter region upstream of the transcription start site. They are recognized by transcription factors and help initiate transcription. TATA boxes are not found in prokaryotic promoters as prokaryotic transcription initiation is regulated differently. TATA boxes are also not enhancers in either prokaryotes or eukaryotes, and are not the eukaryotic equivalent of sigma factors, which play a different role in transcription initiation in prokaryotes.
