The coagulation cascade is divided into two pathways: intrinsic and extrinsic. The intrinsic pathway is activated when blood comes into contact with negatively charged surfaces inside the body, while the extrinsic pathway is initiated by the release of tissue factor from damaged tissue outside of the blood vessels. Both pathways ultimately lead to the activation of thrombin, which converts fibrinogen to fibrin and forms a clot. Platelets and prothrombin are involved in later stages of the cascade, but are not pathways themselves. Heparin and Coumadin are anticoagulants that affect the cascade, but are not pathways either.
