Split-brain patients have had the corpus callosum, the bundle of nerve fibers that connects the two hemispheres of the brain, surgically severed. However, since each hemisphere controls only one half of the body, and different functions are lateralized to each hemisphere, patients are able to continue normal behavior and interaction despite the lack of communication between hemispheres. Essentially, each half of the brain is able to operate independently without significant impairment.
