The focus is on observable behavior, rather than the subjective meanings people attach to behavior (which is the focus of interpretive sociology). While the ultimate goal of scientific sociology may involve social change, it is more concerned with understanding the social world than with advocacy or activism. Qualitative data, which involves non-numerical data such as interview transcripts or observations, may be used in scientific sociology, but only as a supplement to quantitative data.
