Instilling carbamide peroxide (Debrox) twice daily until the canals are clear is the most effective and safe way to remove hard cerumen at home. Using cotton swabs or Q-tips can push the ear wax further into the ear and can even cause damage to the ear canal or eardrum. Instilling tap water or hydrogen peroxide is also not recommended as it can cause irritation or infection in the ear canal.
