Research has shown that handedness may develop prenatally. Using ultrasound, fetuses were observed sucking their thumbs, and they were 8 times more likely to be sucking the thumb on their right hand (Hepper, Wells, & Lynch, 2005). When these fetuses were followed to ages 10 to 12 years, all 60 of the "right-thumb" fetuses were right-handed, but of the 15 "left-thumb" fetuses, 5 had become right-handed. Thus, early hand preferences seem more predictive for later development among right-handers.
