The blind spot is caused by the area in the retina where the optic nerve exits, which contains no photoreceptor cells. This occurs because axons of ganglion cells converge at the optic disc and exit out the back of each eyeball to form the optic nerve. Therefore, the area where the optic nerve leaves the eye has no photoreceptors and is called the blind spot.
