The "Shivercrats" were conservative Democrats in Texas who supported Republican Dwight Eisenhower in the 1952 presidential election, rather than their own party's nominee, Adlai Stevenson. This was largely due to their dissatisfaction with the national Democratic Party's embrace of liberal policies, particularly with regards to civil rights. The term "Shivercrats" is a play on the name of Texas Governor Allan Shivers, who himself endorsed Eisenhower and helped deliver Texas and other Southern states to the Republican ticket.
