Opponent-process theory posits that colors are perceived in terms of opposite pairs, where stimulation of one color inhibits perception of the complementary color. The pairs of black-white, blue-yellow, and red-green are complementary systems, as an increase in one color of the pair leads to a decrease in the other. Orange-blue, however, is not a complementary system because orange is a mixture of red and yellow, which are part of the red-green and blue-yellow complementary systems respectively. Therefore, an increase in orange does not necessarily lead to a decrease in blue, as blue could be at a lower level to begin with.
