UN peacekeeping forces are typically sent to a country after a ceasefire has been arranged between conflicting parties. The purpose of peacekeeping is to monitor and observe the peace process and work towards political solutions, rather than engage in active combat with heavy weaponry such as artillery and tanks. The soldiers are also not under the joint command of generals from each of the countries represented on the peacekeeping force, but rather under the command of the UN. While member states may discuss upgrading forces to take on a more active peacemaking role, this is not currently the norm for UN peacekeeping operations.
