Archaea were first isolated from salt lakes. In 1977, Carl Woese and George Fox used ribosomal RNA sequencing to classify an organism that was previously thought to be a bacterium as a member of a new domain, which they called Archaea. The organism, Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum, was isolated from a salt water marsh. Since then, Archaea have also been found in other extreme environments, such as hot springs, volcanic vents, and polar ice.
