IADLs (instrumental activities of daily living) are often more complex activities that require cognitive and physical functioning, such as managing finances, shopping, cooking and laundry. As a person ages and experiences declines in physical and cognitive function, these activities can become more challenging and may require assistance from others. ADLs (activities of daily living) are more basic self-care tasks such as bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring (moving from one position to another) and feeding, which may also require assistance as a person ages, but often to a lesser extent than IADLs.
