The taste receptors are mainly located on the microvilli (tiny hair-like projections) of the taste cells within the taste buds, and they respond to different chemicals in food and drinks to help detect sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami (savory) tastes. The signals from the taste receptors are sent to the gustatory bulb in the brain via the facial, glossopharyngeal, and vagus nerves.
