Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness and fatigue. Visual problems may be an early symptom, such as drooping eyelids or double vision. There may also be difficulty swallowing, known as dysphagia, which can lead to aspiration and respiratory complications. Poor articulation in speaking is common due to weakness in the muscles needed for speech. Routine exercise may actually worsen symptoms, and while physical therapy may help to maintain muscle strength, there is typically no great improvement in strength with therapy alone.
