Nucleosomes are made up of DNA tightly wrapped around histone proteins. The tight wrapping of DNA makes it difficult for transcription factors (proteins that bind to specific DNA sequences and initiate transcription) to access the DNA. When the nucleosomes are acetylated, they uncoil to allow access to the DNA and transcription can occur. After transcription has taken place, the nucleosomes reassemble.
