Many loyalists (colonists who remained loyal to Britain) fled to Canada or other British colonies after the American Revolution, as they feared persecution or retribution for their allegiance to Britain during the war. Some loyalists also had their property confiscated, causing them to leave the newly formed United States. While some loyalists did lose their lives during the war, it was not a common outcome for those on the losing side. Enslavement was also not directly tied to loyalty during the Revolutionary War, although the institution of slavery did continue in many parts of the newly formed United States.
