A prochiral carbon is a carbon atom that can be converted from achiral to chiral in a single step. In other words, prochiral carbons have two different groups attached to them which, upon a small change in the molecule's structure, would result in a chiral center. In molecule C, the carbon atom marked with an asterisk is prochiral as replacing the hydrogen atom attached to the asterisked carbon with any other group (e.g. -OH, -Cl, -COOH) would result in a chiral center.
