Bacon's Rebellion was a conflict in 1676 between eastern and western political forces in Virginia. The western farmers, led by Nathaniel Bacon, were upset with the Eastern elites represented by Governor William Berkeley. The western farmers felt they were not being adequately protected from Indian attacks, and they also wanted access to more land. The rebellion was ultimately put down, but it highlighted tensions between the different regions and socio-economic classes in the colony. It did not spell the demise of the Virginia Company, see the royal governor of Virginia forced to resign, spread throughout several colonies, or carry on for several years.
